Addition to Zion's Union Church Maxatawny

This 200-year-old “hand built” church was designed with its sanctuary on the second floor to allow for a 25 ft. cathedral ceiling. The congregation wanted to expand their facility with an adjoining structure including new offices, more Sunday school classrooms, a much larger narthex for gathering before and after services, and most importantly, an elevator.

The architects and engineers were challenged with making this new 13,500 sq. ft., two-story structure with a full-sized basement seem as though it had always been there, blending in with both the interior and exterior style of the existing church. Because of the importance of the new narthex as a gathering space for the congregation, the larger portion of the budget was allocated to this area. Light fixture samples were provided to the building committee to allow their input on style selection. Lighting simulation software then provided a visual representation of how the new narthex would look with the fixtures they had chosen.
